The First Appointment

Many people are apprehensive about a first appointment with a mental health professional, especially when they need to address very sensitive concerns. However, a first appointment can be a  valuable and dignified experience.
The initial appointment is an opportunity for the individual or couple to describe their problems, concerns, and treatment goals in detail.

A wide variety of questions will be asked. Topics may include:
emotional concerns involving anxiety, depression, anger, shame, and/or guilt; marital or relationship conflicts; communication problems; specific health and medical issues; traumatic experiences; lifestyle and hobbies; work and family information; specific aspects of sexual functioning, past and present;  and previous psychotherapy & marital/couples therapy.

Diagnostic impressions  and a general description of the therapeutic format will  be provided. Depending on the nature of the presenting problems, a medical evaluation may be helpful. You may also want your physician to confer with Dr. Friedin.

If you are inquiring about therapy services for your child or teenager, it is recommended that you first meet with Dr. Friedin in order to provide information, address your concerns and ask questions.

Insurance and fees will be clarified.

You will have the opportunity to ask questions.
Overall, you are very likely to find that the first appointment will be a professional and comforting experience.
